Dr Eli Goldratt wrote a book called 'The Goal' almost 30 years ago. In the novel a plant manager, named Alex, learns a series of lessons about throughput and bottlenecks. One the more interesting discussion in the book is a dialog between a character named Jonah in which Alex learns that automation does not always make things better and sometimes can make thing even worse.
